If you are on your feet all day, nurses, teachers, retail, hospitality, warehouse, your feet are the first thing to complain and the last thing to get any care. This is a ten-minute evening routine that takes the ache out, plus the small things that stop it building up during the shift.
During the day: three things that help before you get home
- Compression socks. Graduated 20 to 30 mmHg compression socks keep blood from pooling in the lower legs, which is what makes feet feel heavy and swollen by mid-afternoon. Put them on before you stand up in the morning.
- Heel support. If the pain is mostly in the heel, a pair of gel heel cups inside your work shoes absorbs the impact of hard floors.
- Move your toes. Once an hour, lift your toes, spread them, and roll through the foot. Thirty seconds is enough to reset.
The ten-minute evening routine
- Soak (5 minutes). Warm water in a collapsible foot soak tub with a handful of Epsom salt. The tub folds flat afterward, so it lives in a cupboard rather than the middle of the bathroom.
- Roll (2 minutes). Sit down and roll each foot over a wooden foot roller, slowly, heel to toe. If one spot is tender, pause on it. A spiky ball set does the same job and travels in a bag.
- Smooth (1 minute). While the skin is soft from the soak, a few passes with a stainless steel foot file on heels and the ball of the foot. Little and often beats one aggressive session.
- Moisturize and separate (2 minutes). Thick foot cream, then gel toe separators for ten minutes while you sit. They gently spread toes that have been squeezed in shoes all day.
Overnight: fix cracked heels while you sleep
Cracked heels are the one thing the evening routine does not fully solve. Silicone gel heel socks hold moisture against the heel overnight and make a visible difference within a week. Wear them over your foot cream.
For the sofa: walk on it
A pair of acupressure massage slippers feels intense the first time, so start with five minutes in the evening while you make dinner. After a few days, it turns into the thing your feet look forward to.
When to see someone
Sharp heel pain first thing in the morning that eases as you walk, numbness, or swelling in one foot only are worth a visit to a doctor or podiatrist. The routine above is for tired, achy, hard-working feet, not for injuries.
