How to Use a Gua Sha Stone: A 5-Minute Morning Routine for Beginners

Gua sha is one of the simplest facial massage rituals you can do at home. A smooth stone, a little face oil, and five minutes in the morning is enough to de-puff, relax tight jaw muscles, and give skin a fresh, awake look. Here is exactly how to do it, plus the mistakes that make most beginners give up too early.

What you need

  • A gua sha stone. Jade and rose quartz are the classics; stainless steel stays cool longer. See our Jade Roller & Gua Sha Set or the Stainless Steel Gua Sha.
  • A face oil or a slippery serum. The stone must glide, never drag.
  • Five minutes. That is it.

Step by step

  1. Prep. Cleanse, then apply enough oil that the stone slides easily. Hold the stone almost flat against the skin, at about a 15-degree angle.
  2. Neck first. Sweep from the base of the neck up toward the jaw, three to five strokes per side. This opens the path for everything that follows.
  3. Jawline. Place the curved edge under the chin and pull along the jaw to the ear. Wiggle the stone gently at the ear for a second, then repeat five times.
  4. Cheeks. From the side of the nose, sweep out and up toward the temple. Light pressure only.
  5. Under-eyes. Use the smallest edge and the lightest touch, from the inner corner out to the temple.
  6. Brows and forehead. Sweep from the brow up to the hairline, then from the center of the forehead out to the temples.
  7. Finish. Sweep down the sides of the neck one last time.

Common mistakes

  • Too much pressure. Gua sha should never hurt or leave marks on the face. If the skin turns red, lighten up.
  • Dry skin. Without oil the stone tugs the skin. Always add slip.
  • Skipping the neck. The neck strokes are what make the rest of the routine work.

Morning or night?

Morning is best for de-puffing; a cold stone straight from the fridge feels wonderful. Evening works for relaxing the jaw after a long day. Our Ice Roller pairs well before a morning gua sha, and the Heated Gua Sha is the cozy evening version.

How to clean your stone

Rinse with warm water and a drop of gentle soap after every use, dry with a soft cloth, and store it flat. Never drop it; natural stone can chip.
